UPDATE: Driver Charged After Tanker Crash On Route 50

Posted: Updated:

HEBRON, Md. - The driver has been charged after a crash on Route 50 closed the road way in both directions.

Maryland State Police say a tractor trailer overturned just after 2:35 PM, on Westbound Route 50 in Hebron, near the Royal Farms. An investigation showed that Steve Bivens, who was driving Eastbound, left the roadway, hit a ditch, and overturned, landing on a guardrail.

Officials say the tanker was carrying flammable liquid, and was leaking fuel after the crash.

The 58-year-old Pennsylvania man was trapped inside until EMS and Fire crews arrived on scene. Bivens, who was reportedly wearing a seatbelt, was taken to PRMC with non-life threatening injures.

Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, according to officials. MSP say Bivens was at fault, and was charged as so.

Route 50 between Rockinwalkin Road and White Lowe Road, near the Salisbury Bypass, is expected to be closed until at least 6 PM.

SHA is providing the following detours:

Eastbound US 50 detour – Rockinwalkin Road to MD 349 (Nanticoke Road) to US 50 Business.

Westbound US 50 detour – White Lowe Road to Log Cabin Road to Spring Hill Road and back to US 50.
