Food Stamp Service Restored

Posted: Updated:

WMDT 47 NEWS - Saturday, thousands were faced with messages like this one on the Maryland Department of Human Resources website, saying they couldn't access their food stamp debit card.
Like many we spoke to, Michel Demanche says "I automatically thought it was part of the government shut down."

The malfunction was actually the result of a technical problem at the Xerox Corporation, which said in a statement: "During a routine test of our back-up systems Saturday morning, Xerox's Electronic Benefits Transfer system experienced a temporary shutdown."

Maryland and Virginia were among the seventeen states impacted by the glitch.  More than 700,000 Marylanders are a part of the state's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

"If you show up to the grocery store expecting to buy your food for the week, it's a good chance that you're going to go home and people are going to go hungry," says Demanche.

The system-wide breakdown also affected stores.  One retailer tells WMDT, sales were down as much as seven percent.

Late Sunday afternoon, the service was back up and running, with a message from the Department of Human Resources saying: "We realize that access to these benefits is important to families, and we apologize for any inconvenience you experienced."
