WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - The American Civil Liberties Union is asking a federal court to set a new deadline for Delaware to comply with a consent agreement aimed at protecting female prisoners from sexual abuse.
But Department of Correction officials say they already are in compliance with the 2011 consent agreement and court order, and that no new deadline is needed.
Officials say several changes have been made at the Baylor Women's Correctional Institution to protect inmates and ensure that allegations of sexual abuse are fully investigated.
But the prison warden acknowledged at a hearing Tuesday that installation of new security cameras won't be completed until next month, and that the facility is dealing with significant understaffing.
A magistrate's recommendations on the ACLU's request will be presented to a federal judge later this month.
