Consumer Confidence Drops Under Government Shutdown

Posted: Updated:

WMDT 47 News - We asked Phyllis Harris if it's changed her shopping habits, "Yes.  Yes, yes, yes, yes," she says, "we don't feel comfortable with it, we don't feel comfortable about it at all...I don't."

According to a recent Gallup index, consumer confidence has dropped nearly 20 points since Mid-September, just before the Government Shutdown.

Tylor Clagget, a Finance professor at Salisbury University, says "anytime there's uncertainty, it affects businesses and people.  It does...really start to slow the economy down quickly."

As a pharmacy, Craig Schury's Salisbury business, Pemberton Pharmacy and Gifts, relies on what many deem a necessity, medication, but he also sells more luxury items.

Since opening in six and a half years ago, Schury says he's had to add incentives to maintain that clientele.

"We've offered more, we, we do a lot of free gift wrap, we do, ah, free gift bags things like that," says Schury.

While many people haven't felt the direct impacts of the Government Shutdown here on Delmarva just yet, they are keeping an eye out for what could happen in the future.

Amber Keever, of Salisbury, a young wife and mother, says "we try to think ahead, so when it comes to, if we feel like it's going to get any worse, it probably will affect us, but until then, we just try to stay a step ahead."

Herbert Shockley of Willards is "just taking it day by day...watching what we do and watching what we spend."
