Affordable Care Act's Health Insurance Exchanges Launch

Posted: Updated:

WMDT 47 News - Tuesday marks the launch of the Affordable Care Act's online exchanges, also called "marketplaces," designed to enroll millions of Americans into health insurance under ObamaCare.

On Maryland's lower shore, federally funded certified experts called navigators were on hand to answer questions and guide residents of the tri-county area through different health insurance options offered by Maryland's marketplace, Maryland Health Connection. More than 40 people called in the first day to get more information and make appointments with navigators. Navigators will be available to help people sign up for insurance through March 31, which is the last day of open enrollment. After March 31, those without health insurance will have to pay a tax penalty.

Staff members also have scheduled office hours Monday - Friday at nearly 30 locations throughout Somerset, Wicomico and Worcester counties. To speak with a staff member, find the closest location to you and set up an appointment, call 855-445-5540. For more information, visit

In Delaware, 90,000 people who are uninsured have the opportunity to buy coverage through Delaware's health insurance marketplace, Choose Health Delaware. More than 60 marketplace guides will branch out all across the First State to help people enroll.

Accomack County residents in Virginia can call their designated navigator in Norfolk. Call 757-627-3362 for more information or visit
