SALISBURY, Md. - Crews are on scene in Downtown Salisbury, where a crane reportedly toppled over, hitting a car on a bridge.
WMDT spoke with officials at the scene who said the crane is an older model with fewer stabilization features than newer cranes, so when a piece of the top section of the crane broke off, it caused the bottom part of the crane to topple over, into a nearby bridge. The crane was reportedly working on the site of the old Feldman's building at the time of the incident.
The operator was okay, as was the driver of a black Mercedes sedan that the crane hit on the bridge. According to officials, the bridge is expected to be closed for a considerable amount of time, but officials hope to have it reopened late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning.
OSHA is investigating the incident, before the scene is cleaned up.
Currently, Mill Street is shut down from Route 50 to the 5 points intersection. Traffic is being redirected to Carroll Street.
Salisbury Fire Department, including a Hazmat truck is on scene. Officials tell WMDT that around 35 gallons of diesel and hydraulic fluid spilled during the crash, but they are containing the leak, as precaution, and it is not a danger to the public.
