House Republicans Work Immigration Behind Scenes

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON (AP) - Immigration overhaul legislation has been dormant in the House for months, but a few Republicans are working behind the scenes to revive it.

Their efforts come as the Capitol is caught up in a partisan brawl over spending.

The chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Republican Bob Goodlatte (GUD'-lat), has been talking about providing legal status for the estimated 11 million immigrants living here illegally.

Goodlatte is also working with House Majority Leader Eric Cantor on legislation to offer citizenship to immigrants brought illegally to the U.S. as children. Goodlatte would like to see votes in October, but House leaders haven't made a commitment.

House Democrats are getting impatient and plan to introduce their own legislation.

Senators passed a bill in June offering a route to citizenship for millions.
