Panel Recommends Pardon In Health Care Fraud Case

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del. (AP) - A state panel is recommending that Gov. Jack Markell grant a pardon to a man convicted of health care fraud several years ago.

Sachin Karnik pleaded guilty to felony fraud involving false Medicaid claims in 2006. He was sentenced to probation and ordered to pay more than $60,000 restitution.

Karnik, who now works for the Delaware Council on Gambling Problems, appeared Thursday before the state Board of Pardons.

The board voted 3-to-1 to recommend that Markell grant Karnik a pardon, while recognizing the seriousness of his crimes.

Karnik, who was a licensed clinical social worker, said Thursday that the fraudulent Medicaid claims were an attempt to cover losses from his addiction to roulette. He is hoping that a pardon will expand his opportunities to help others struggling with addiction.
