Number Unaccounted for Drops to Around 80

Posted: Updated:

LYONS, Colo. (AP) - The number of people who are unaccounted for in the aftermath of the Colorado floods has dropped to around 80.

At one point the number had topped 1,200. It's been dropping as people are rescued, communications restored and duplications on lists are eliminated.

Seven people are known to have died in the flooding. Three others are listed as missing and presumed dead.

Meanwhile, residents who have ventured back into the flood-ravaged town of Lyons have found dozens of homes destroyed, with family keepsakes missing, food spoiling and mud everywhere. One woman says, "It's just sickening."

The Longmont Times-Call says it could be two to six months before Lyons is livable again, but residents willing to rough it will be allowed to stay.

Crews are working to clear debris and restore power, water and sewers knocked out by flooding across nearly 2,000 square miles. Hundreds of miles of roads and dozens of bridges also must be repaired.
