CRISFIELD, Md. - A former Crisfield Police Chief is behind bars, after allegedly breaking into a parked vehicle.

Crisfield Police say on Sunday night, around 11:00 PM, they were called to John's Auto on Jacksonville Road, for a suspicious person. When they arrived, officers say they stopped a truck that was trying to leave, driven by 58-year-old Norman Swift 3rd, of Marion.

An investigation reportedly revealed that a truck parked on the lot, waiting for service, had been broken into, and items had been taken. Police say they searched Swift's vehicle and found a .22 Magnum Tracker Revolver handgun and ammunition for the weapon and a .22 caliber long rifle with ammunition. They were also apparently able to recover the stolen items.

Swift was arrested, and charged with theft over $500, theft less than $500, destruction of property, and 2 counts of firearms illegal possession. He is being held on $25,000 bail.

Swift is reportedly not allowed to possess firearms because of a protective order. Swift was the Crisfield Police Chief until resigning in 1990 due to criminal charges. He was with the department for 10 years.
