Plea Deal Reached In Afghan Bribery Case

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del. (AP) - A former State Department contractor charged with accepting bribes in Afghanistan has reached a plea deal with federal prosecutors in Delaware.

Kenneth Michael Brophy is scheduled to enter a guilty plea at a hearing Thursday, according to court papers filed Friday.

The plea agreement comes two weeks after a federal judge rejected several pretrial motions by the defense, and nine months after prosecutors signaled that they were trying to work out a deal with 65-year-old Brophy.

Brophy was arrested last October after traveling to Delaware to attend a wedding. He was accused of taking $30,000 from an Afghan company that he supervised in a prison renovation in Kabul, and which he helped in appealing the termination of other U.S. contracts because of shoddy work in building Afghan police facilities.
