Ocean City's Tech Scene Awarded By Google

Posted: Updated:

OCEAN CITY, Md. - There's no doubt social media and smart phones have become an important part of our culture, and now Google has taken note of how they're being used on the Eastern Shore. Ocean City was recently named a 2013 "Google eCity," one of only 50 named nationwide.

"It's almost 24-7 that someone's paying attention to our social media," said Carl Bozick, General Manager of Macky's Bayside Bar and Grill. "We want people to always feel like they're connected."

That's a growing trend in Ocean City. Businesses are using apps, websites and the like to tap into a coveted pool of potential customers.

"Social media's pretty big - facebook instagram vine," said Brady Golden, vacationing from Pennsylvania. "So that's definitely a big award for ocean city."

And it's not just the businesses, even the town has gotten in on the digital deal.  Ocean City's app is a one stop shop for deals on restaurants, hotels and activities around town to help plan the next step for the agenda.

But, could the abundance of tweets, posts and pics all be too much?

"I'm down here on the beach having fun with my friends, so I try to stay away from social media while I'm on vacation," Golden said.

Aaron Blair agrees.

"Not while I'm in Ocean City," Blair said. "I don't use social media 24 as far as to find anything."

Despite some taking a break from social media, Carl says he's pretty pleased with the real world fans who stick with them in the virtual world.

"Fifteen hundred people is a lot of followers for a little restaurant here on 54th street and the bay."
