PRMC Announces Closing Of Transitional Care Unit, 43 Employees Affected

Posted: Updated:

SALSIBURY, Md - Peninsula Regional Medical Center's Transitional Care Unit will be closed after the last batch of patients are discharged, and 43 staff members may soon be looking for new jobs.

"As of today, PRMC will no longer be accepting admissions to our transitional care unit. The patients who are still on the unit are going to be cared for. We're not abandoning those patients, we're not sending them anywhere. We will continue on with their care plan until they reach their goals," says media director Roger Follebout.

The Transitional Care Unit was opened in 1997 and was created to help fill a growing need for sub-acute services in the Salisbury community. However, hospital officials tell WMDT that with the advancement in the healthcare industry, combined with the fact that there are many other rehab options in the community including, HealthSound Chesapeake Rehab Hospital and the expansion of Genesis Salisbury Nursing and Rehab Center, PRMC decided it would be more cost-effective to cut the program.

As for those employees in the unit, they'll be getting help in looking for work. Follebout said "we're working very close with those employees to find them employment, looking perhaps to moving them into different positions in the medical center if they're open and qualified."

As of right now, all 43 staff members are expected to return on Monday. However, whatever happens beyond that is unclear.
