Should We Take Antibiotics If Sick?

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md - As Fall season is approaching, many people will get sick and some will rely on antibiotics. But doctors say that they shouldn't take them right away.

"You should let your body do it's job. Do what it's built to do and fight off these infections. I think people want a quick fix, so they go into the doctor, getting the antibiotic, taking care of that and sometime's that isn't the case," says Karla Christine, a pharmacist in Apple Discount Drugs in Fruitland.

Doctors also recommend that one should use an antibiotic to fight an infection after 7 days of letting the body deal with it.

"Another reason to avoid overuse is that it can cause a diarrhea-like infection that can occur from antibiotic use," says registered nurse Flora Glasgow, who works at PRMC.

Antibiotics are estimated to be prescribed 50% of the time unnecessarily.
