FEDERALSBURG, Md - Orchestra County Deputies busted a dog fighting ring Sunday. Thirteen dogs were recovered from the home.

"Unfortunately, 10 of the animals had to be euthanized due to a recommendation by the vet. We had 2 puppies that had been rehabilitated and are up for adoption. The other dog was a female and gave birth to 9 puppies and they will be able to be up for adoption as well," says Sheriff James W. Phillips Jr.

The sheriff's office was assisting the Orchestra County's narcotics task force with another raid at that location when they came upon evidence of the dogs. When the deputies on scene realized the conditions of the animals, they contacted Orchestra County animal control and had them respond.

"We still have a lot of people that have a lot of animals, but there was evidence on this site that these dogs were being used in a dog fighting ring. That's what's so disturbing about it. If you look at the conditions of the animals, you know the type of injuries they sustained, it's a terrible way to treat any living thing and I'm thankful to say it's not as prevalent as other people believe," says Phillips Jr.

The suspect, 23-year-old Ashley Brook Greenhawk, was arrested. She is being charged with counts of animal cruelty, failure to provide food and water, dog fighting and possession of dogs with the intent to use them for fights. She was released by a court commissioner with her own recognizance.
