VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - Emergency officials have identified a runner who died after collapsing during the Virginia Beach Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon.
Virginia Beach EMS spokesman Ed Brazle tells media outlets that 50-year-old Larry Wegner of Glen Allen collapsed after passing the course's 1-mile mark during Sunday's race. An off-duty fire department officer who was running in the race and several bystanders provided assistance until emergency crews arrived and took Wegner to a local hospital.
The race's medical director, Dr. P.Z. Pearce, said in a statement that the runner died at the hospital Sunday afternoon.
Brazle says 13 people were taken to the hospital from the race for various reasons, including dehydration and heat exhaustion.
The 13.-1 mile race has had three other deaths in its history - in 2005, 2009 and 2010.
