RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Proposals to lighten up on child prostitutes and people who are forced into prostitution are on the Virginia State Crime Commission's agenda.
The commission is scheduled to discuss the issues Tuesday.
The panel is reviewing legislation proposed last winter to decriminalize child prostitution. The rationale is that kids engaged in prostitution should be handled as children in need of services rather than lawbreakers. The bill also establishes a defense for prostitution if force or deception was involved.
Another bill referred to the commission would allow a conviction to be expunged if it's proven the defendant had been forced to work as a prostitute.
