BETHANY BEACH, Del. - Although the official last day of summer is still a few weeks away, Bethany Beach still said their goodbyes on Labor Day.
The event, dubbed "Bethany Beach Jazz Funeral," starts with the mourners, draped in black shrouds, dark sunglasses, and other traditional funeral gear, making their way down the boardwalk. Part of the procession carries a casket with a mannequin representing "Summer," to its final resting place at the Boardwalk Bandstand. Here, a jazz concert of three bands, including the Dixie Cats, the Downtown Dixieland Band, and the Jazz Funeral irregulars put on a free concert for the public. One "friend of Summer" says she has been involved with the event for 28 years.
"We have good fun, it's a great time of the year. It's kind of sad because summer is going, but it's been a wonderful summer, so we should celebrate."
