DE State Police Investigate Crash on Indian River Bridge

Posted: Updated:

BETHANY BEACH, Del - Delaware State Police say they are currently investigating a serious motorcycle crash that occurred early Saturday morning on the Indian River Inlet Bridge.

According to reports, at around 2:10 AM, Robert Butler, 27, was driving a motorcycle northbound on Coastal Highway (SR1) at a high rate of speed and struck the rear of a van operated by Eli Stapleford, 25. Butler reported careened to the right striking the concrete barrier before coming to a stop in the roadway. Troopers say Butler was ejected from the motorcycle and was transported by EMS to Beebe Medical Center with serious life-threatening injuries. Stapleford was reportedly not injured in the collision and was able to bring his vehicle to a controlled stop. Reports say SR1 northbound was closed for more than 4 hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.
