CRISFIELD, Md. - Last year, the Crisfield Crab Derby was marred by gang-related violence just blocks away from the event.

Three consecutive days of violence, starting with incidents on Friday, according to Crisfield police chief Mike Tabor.

"We had a stabbing, we had a shooting, followed by another shots fired at a house, which all occurred in the Crisfield Housing Authority in the Somers Cove Apartments," said Tabor.

During the Labor Day weekend, the city imposed curfew at the Somers Cove Apartments, just blocks away from the marina, the site of the annual Crab Derby.

This year, police are stepping up security.

Tabor says a lot of "emphasis is placed on making sure everyone is town is safe."

First, the department is utilizing security cameras around the housing authority. This weekend, Crisfield is calling in four neighboring units: Maryland State Police, Somerset County Sheriff's Office, Princess Anne and Pocomoke City police stations. It's a move residents say will help keep the weekend running smoothly.

"I think everything will be stepped up and everybody will be safe," said Deondre Brown.

With extra force around the city, the Crisfield Chamber of Commerce hopes to put last year behind them and move on to an event that reportedly brings "tens of thousands of dollars" into city, according to director Valerie Howard.

"We've been meeting on Crab Derby for months now and [last year's shooting and curfew] has never been an issue," said Howard. "It's never been brought up.

"It's in the past and that's where we put it and we're moving forward so, non issue."

Police will be walking through the Crisfield Housing Authority as apart of their non-violence initiative. It's what Tabor says police did after the last year's shooting to talk to residents about any concerns and ongoing issues.
