Horse In DE Tests Positive For West Nile Virus

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del. (AP) - Agriculture officials say a horse in Kent County has tested positive for West Nile virus, the first such case in 10 years.

The Department of Agriculture announced the finding on Friday. Officials say the horse is recovering well.

State veterinarian Dr. Heather Hirst says horse owners should vaccinate their animals against West Nile and Eastern equine encephalitis. She also urged horse owners to be aware of signs of infection, which include fever, loss of appetite, head pressing, depression or personality change and wobbling or staggering.

Horses and humans can contract WNV and EEE if bitten by a mosquito carrying the virus. The viruses are not transmitted between horses or from horses to people.
