Wicomico County Sheriff's Office Warns Of "Required Fee" Scams

Posted: Updated:

WICOMICO CO., Md - Local authorities are warning residents about a new scam that has reportedly been happening in their county. The Wicomico County Sheriff's Office says they have investigated several incidents of fraud, or attempted fraud.

According to the report, residents are contacted by someone who says they are with Publisher's Clearing House, and the resident is a prize winner, but in order to claim the winnings, they must first pay required fees. In one incident, a victim reportedly paid more than $3,000 in fees, in an attempt to claim their alleged prize of almost a million dollars, and a new Mercedes.

The Sheriff's Office says in another recent incident, a resident was told her grandson needed immediate bail money in another state, along with a fee, to keep it off his criminal record.

Both victims apparently turned over large amounts of money during these incidents.

An investigation reportedly shows that the calls in these incidents are coming from outside of the Continental United States. The Sheriff's Office reminds residents not to make payments over the phone, or authorize electronic fund transfers to anyone, unless you are certain its legitimate.

They also say that proper financial institutions won't ask for your personal information over the phone, and if you win something from a reputable organization, they won't require you to pay a fee to claim your winnings.
