DE Officials Gear Up For Sportsmen Against Hunger Program

Posted: Updated:

DELAWARE - With the official start of hunting season less than one week away, Delaware officials say they are gearing up for their "Sportsmen Against Hunger Program."

The General Assembly has given full funding to the processing and distribution of deer meat, and now the program is preparing to accept the donations of venison to help feed needy residents. Officials say this program is especially ideal for hunters that are helping to reduce the areas that are over-populated with deer.

"This is an outlet for those hunters that may harvest more deer than they need, to actually get it into a setting that is beneficial to needy families," says Rob Hossler, Wildlife Program Manager with the Delaware Division of Fish and Wildlife.

Last year, nearly 20,000 pounds of deer meat were donated to the program, which provided more than 100,000 meals. Officials say they are hoping they can have the same success this year. For more information on how and where to donate, visit the Sportsmen Against Hunger Program website.
