FRUITLAND, Md. - You may see some changes to curriculum this year, in Wicomico County.

While at Fruitland Primary Monday morning, WMDT chatted with the principal who tells us some exciting educational alterations are in store for students. Pam Mitchell tells us, the Common Core State Standards are still in place, but a new Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, better known as STEM, program will be implemented. But that's not all.

Mitchell says "we're going to be incorporating junior grade books into our curriculum in grades 1 and 2, that's an accelerated reading program that our media specialist is going to be working with some children on."

Principal Mitchell put a lot of focus on reading, telling us about an "accelerated reader" initiative that intends to better reading skills in young children. The goal is to have children read ten to 20 books each marking term.

Additional information on these programs can be found under 47 Weblinks.
