LEWES, Del. - The Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit say they have charged a 24-year-old Georgetown man with Vehicular Homicide and related charges, after a motor vehicle crash led to the death of a 2 year old girl.
According to reports, the crash occurred August 17th at approximately 9:20 PM. Police say a 19-year-old Rehoboth man, was driving a Chevrolet Trailblazer, and stopped with a left turn signal, preparing to turn left into a private driveway on John J. Williams Highway eastbound. Henry Roblero-Mazariegos, 24, failed to observe the stopped Trailblazer, and struck the 19 year-old's vehicle in the rear. Genesis Valazquez-Santizo, 2, from Georgetown, was a rear seat passenger in Roblero-Mazariegos' car. The investigation reportedly determined that the 2-year-old victim was not properly secured within the child restraint seat, and the seat was not properly secured within the vehicle, causing her to be ejected and propelled forward within the vehicle. Reports say Genesis Valazquez-Santizo was transported by ambulance to the Beebe Hospital and was pronounced dead due to traumatic injuries. Roblero-Mazariegos was reportedly properly restrained and refused medical treatment. The 19-year-old driver was not injured, and the two passengers in his car received non-life threatening injuries.
After further investigation, police say it was determined that Roblero-Mazariegos was driving under the influence of alcohol. He was reportedly taken into custody without incident and charged with Vehicular Homicide Second Degree, two counts of Vehicular Assault Second Degree, Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol, Driving while Suspended or Revoked, and Child Under 8 and Under 65 Pounds must be in Child Restraint. He was allegedly committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution on $13,001 Cash Bond. The Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit says they are continuing to investigate this crash.
