Traffic Stop Leads To Large Cigarette Seizure In Laurel

LAUREL, Del. - More than 370 cartons of cigarettes were reportedly seized during a traffic stop in Sussex County. Laurel Police say they stopped 46-year-old Mohamed A. Shamalah, of North Carolina, on Route 13, for a traffic violation.

During the stop the officer reportedly smelled marijuana, and arrested Shamalah. A search of the vehicle reportedly turned up marijuana along with 379 cartons of untaxed cigarettes, so the Delaware Division of Alcohol and Tobacco Enforcement was contacted.

DATE's investigation reportedly showed that Shamalah had bought the cigarettes in North Carolina, and Virginia for around $20,000 and was taking then to an unknown location. He was charged with possession of untaxed cigarettes, attempting to evade Delaware excise tax, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Shamalah's Volvo 4S, the cigarettes, and more than $400 in cash were seized. Shamalah was also issued a traffic citation from Laurel Police. He is being held at Sussex Correction Institution on $8,000 bail.
