WMDT 47 NEWS - A new survey claims that public school teachers spend about $485 of their own money for classroom supplies.
The National School Supply and Equipment Association survey says most teachers are doing their shopping at discount stores, in order to afford more for their students. Erin Fitzgerald, a high school social studies teacher for Dorchester Co. Public Schools admits she's had to pay out of her pocket in the past. She says you can pay more, depending on the subject you teach.
"If you have labs for your classes or if you have a particular project you want to do but don't have any particular funding for it, you have to either kind of bite the bullet and go out and purchase it or the kids don't have the opportunity to participate in that event," said Fitzgerald.
Teachers can apply for up to $250 in federal reimbursement for books, supplies and computer equipment.
