RICHMOND, Va. - Republican Del. John Cosgrove has won a seat in the Virginia Senate to replace retired Sen. Harry Blevins in an uncontested special election with fewer than 3,000 votes cast.
The 59-year-old Cosgrove, who has represented Chesapeake in the House of Delegates since 2002, faced no Democratic opponent in Tuesday's election in the Hampton Roads district. He will finish the final two years of the term Blevins won in 2011.
Democratic nominee Kerry B. Holmes withdrew from the race.
Blevins, a 77-year-old Republican moderate, served three years in the House and a dozen years in the Senate after that before retiring midway through his term, citing health concerns.
Cosgrove's vacant House seat will be filled in November's election for all 100 Virginia House seats.
