Ocean Rescue Numbers Take A Major Decline In Ocean City

Posted: Updated:

OCEAN CITY, Md. - In Maryland, there have been six deaths alone in the month of July due to drowning. However, in Ocean City, there has not been one this entire season.

The Ocean City Beach Patrol says they have made about 1,357 rescues so far this summer, which is down from the 2,162 rescues over the same period last year. In addition, their "preventative actions," which consists of the lifeguard blowing his or her whistle to get people out of a dangerous area, are down by more than half of their total for this time last year. Ocean City Beach Patrol's Lieutenant Ward Kovacs says unusually cool water temperatures, and smaller rip currents, may be two contributing factors. He says he is used to the water being around 74 or 75 degrees at this time of year, along with rip currents around 50 yards wide.

"We just haven't seen that yet," says Kovacs. "With the water temperature combined with the smaller and weaker rip currents, you don't have as many people out as there as before, so the sheer number of chances for people to get into trouble have dropped."

Although these numbers are promising, the beach patrol still urges caution. Kovacs recommends that no one swims alone, and if there's no lifeguard on duty, to stay out of the ocean.
