Man Charged With DUI After Reportedly Crashing In Police Car In Dover

DOVER, Del. - A Cheswold man was charged after apparently crashing into a State Police patrol vehicle, in Dover on Tuesday.

Delaware State Police say around 2:30 AM, a DSP Trooper was driving on Forrest Avenue (SR8), coming up to Rose Valley School Road, when 28-year-old Alex Weal blew a stop sign at the intersection and hit the fully marked patrol car. According to the report, Weal's Mazda continued on across SR8, until finally stopping in a ditch along Cahoon Branch Road, while the cruiser spun out, and stopped on SR8.

The trooper, who was reportedly wearing a seat belt, was treated for non-life threatening injures at Kent General Hospital, and released. Weal, was not injured, and was taken to Troop 3 for a DUI investigation. Police say he was later charged with 2nd degree assault, driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to have insurance in possession, and failure to stop at a stop sign. Weal was then released on bond.

The intersection of SR8 and Rose Valley School Road was closed for about three hours while the crash was investigated and cleared. The investigation into this incident is on-going at this time.
