West Nile Detected In Mosquitoes In Suffolk

Posted: Updated:

SUFFOLK, Va. (AP) - Suffolk is stepping up mosquito control efforts in several neighborhoods after tests found mosquitoes infected with West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis.

The city's Mosquito Control Division tells media outlets that surveillance, treatment of standing water and evening spray applications for adult mosquitoes will be increased in the affected neighborhoods.

The city advises residents to remain indoors the hour before dusk to an hour before dawn. That's when mosquitoes are most active.

Residents also are advised to wear loose, long and light-colored clothing when outdoors and use repellents containing DEET.

Horse owners are advised to have their animals vaccinated for Eastern Equine Encephalitis.
