OCEAN CITY, Md. - The world's largest billfish tournament kicked off August 5th, making it the 40th year that it has taken place in Ocean City.

Mayor Rick Meehan says that 262 boats registered this year, and 204 boats came out on the first day of the tournament. The event runs through Friday, August 9th, and the mayor says, this week always turns out to be the biggest in Ocean City.

"It's a big week. It's a big week for all of the restaurants in Ocean City, so it's a popular event that really is an economic benefit to the town."

Competitors can fish three out of the five days, and for the winners, total prize money is about $2.4 million. Meehan says there is a first through third place in each category, and the "White Marlin" category is the biggest, followed by the "Blue Marlin." Other categories include "Tuna" and "Dolphin." Every day around 3:00 PM, a large crowd gathers by the weighing station to check out the competition.

"There is a big crowd this year and they're expecting to see some fish," says Meehan. "Somebody's going to walk away with over a million dollars."
