Woman Missing In Dewey Beach Found, Town Reacts

Posted: Updated:

DEWEY BEACH, Del. - Two big cases in Dewey Beach, in just two weeks.  An alleged rape, and a missing persons report.

One of those cases was solved Monday, but it doesn't change the fact that this is highly unusual for the beach town.

The signs looking for 25 year old Cecily Connell from Newark were still up at Woody's in Dewey Beach, Monday afternoon, about an hour after we learned she was found, safe.  The incident was apparently a false alarm, but a costly one for the beach town.  The price tag, $10,000, and it still has people talking.

"Things like this don't happen normally in this town," says Jacob Barr, who works at Woody's along Coastal Highway in Dewey Beach.

After an unusually active 2 weeks, with an alleged rape in an outdoor shower on July 27, and this missing persons case, Dewey beach mayor Diane Hanson requested crime reports from town police.

"I asked for numbers, but the problem is, and fortunately, they're very involved on resolving the case, so that they were not able to really go back verify all the data, but what I did get was preliminary data.  There is no change in the crime rate in  Dewey for the past 3 or 4 years," says Hanson.

While Dewey Beach officials stress the town is a safe place, they are taking some steps this fall to assure security.

The mayor says eight security cameras have been ordered and will be installed throughout Dewey in the fall, and should be fully running next summer.

We're told individual stores and restaurants already have surveillance cameras of their own, which are being used to solve any open cases.

In the case of Cecily Connell, who police say was in Dewey with friends over the weekend when she left for the restroom around midnight on August 4th, and didn't return.  Connell was found earlier Monday by a search party in the Pot-Nets area, about 15 miles from where she was last seen.
