ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - State Sen. E.J. Pipkin is resigning to pursue a master's degree in sports management at Southern Methodist University.
Pipkin, who is the Senate minority leader, said in a telephone interview Monday that his resignation will be effective next week, when he enrolls in the school in Dallas.
Pipkin has been a senator since 2003. He has served as minority leader since 2011. In that role, he often has been the chief debater for Republicans in the Senate, where Democrats outnumber Republicans 35-12.
Pipkin, R-Cecil, says he felt it was time to make a career change. He had a career in finance before becoming a lawmaker.
He says he only reached the decision to step down and enroll at SMU on Sunday.
