Candidates For Gov Appear At VA Farm Forum

Posted: Updated:

WYTHEVILLE, Va. (AP) - Virginia gubernatorial candidates Ken Cuccinelli and Terry McAuliffe traded criticism on issues like transportation, health care and community involvement during a Friday forum in Wytheville.

The candidates spoke separately at the agriculture-focused event, and both discussed the state's number one industry in the context of their larger campaign goals.

McAuliffe talked about agriculture's $79 billion economic impact in the state in the context of the need for economic growth. Cuccinelli discussed the importance of defending property rights and economic freedom against federal overreach so farmers can stay in business.

While Cuccinelli pledged to fight against the Affordable Care Act, McAuliffe focused in on a single part of the federal health care law. He argued that Virginia stands to lose billions if it does not participate in the law's Medicaid expansion.
