VA To Spend $3.5M On Crisis Training

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. - Virginia will spend about $3.5 million of its share of a national Medicaid fraud settlement to train police to better respond to emergency situations involving people with mental illness.

Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli says that the U.S. Treasury Department has approved the expenditure. About $800,000 will go to training conducted by the state Department of Criminal Justice Services. The other $2.7 million will go to 19 local agencies.

Treasury has determined that Virginia is entitled to $115 million for leading the investigation that led to last year's $1.5 billion Abbot Laboratories settlement. The attorney general's office can spend $10 million for internal programs, but other law enforcement projects require Treasury approval. The training announced Wednesday is the first project approved.
