Saving Christmas, In July: Bethlehem Post Office Stays Open

Posted: Updated:

BETHLEHEM, Md. - Still in the middle of a budget deficit, the U-S Postal Service has been cutting back hours at rural locations across Delmarva.  Monday, they spoke with folks in one Caroline County community, worried their office might be on the chopping block.

"We don't want the post office in Bethlehem to close," says June Wagner.

Well, the prayers of Bethlehem residents have apparently been answered.  Their post office will stay open, but this quaint office is still under review, and their hours will be cut.

Even in the digital age, folks say there's something special about sending a standard letter from Bethlehem.

June says "this post office sends out thousands of Christmas cards and a lot of packages at Christmas season, and that brings in quite a but if revenue."

People traverse from afar, sometimes hundreds of miles, just to get a "Three Wise Men" stamp, and have the "Bethlehem" post mark during the holidays.

"One lady came from Switzerland, she came to visit her family, says Kelly Furgeson, a Bethlehem resident.

But that doesn't change the fact that U-S Postal Service is losing more than $16 billion a year.  The cuts, could save about $2 billion.

Bethlehem was just one stop for Brian Landry, Post Office Manager for the Eastern Shore.

"We're not closing any of the offices right now," says Landry, but he stresses, there will be changes.

The change in hours at the Bethlehem post office is expected to take effect within two to three months, and the post office manager tells WMDT he hopes to have hours extended during the holidays period.
