Topless Bar Owner Looks To Rebuild After Arson

Posted: Updated:

SMYRNA, Del. (AP) - The owner of the Fairways Inn is hoping to rebuild after the Smyrna topless bar was burned down earlier this month.

The business' license was renewed last week and owner Willis Duckery says after employees' background checks are conducted, he can start looking for a contractor.

The fire marshal ruled the July 4 blaze at the bar an arson. Damage to the building totaled nearly $400,000, but the building was insured. Duckery says he is confident that security camera video he turned over to investigators will lead to some answers.

Since it opened in 1967, Fairways has been a Kent County fixture as the only topless tavern in the state. Duckery says he hopes to reopen by NASCAR weekend at the Dover International Speedway at the end of September.
