INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Investigators are trying to determine if a church-owned bus that crashed Saturday in Indianapolis had mechanical issues.
Three people were killed and 26 others were taken to area hospitals.
The driver and 37 passengers, many of them teenagers, were returning to the Colonial Hills Baptist Church from a youth camp in Michigan.
Officials say the dead include a husband and wife.
A hospital spokeswoman says nine teenagers were taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital, including one in critical condition. She says three of those were treated and released. She also says 10 others, including nine teenagers and a toddler, were taken to Riley Hospital for Children. Seven of those teenagers were treated and released.
Witnesses say the bus came off an interstate at a high rate of speed this afternoon, struck a retaining wall as it tried to round a curve and overturned.
The driver reportedly said his brakes failed.
