Fatal House Fire in Lewes

LEWES, Del. - A fire in Lewes has claimed the life of a man in a home in West Bay.

The blaze started just before 9 a.m. Saturday, and crews from Rehoboth Beach, Lewes Fire Company, Indian River Fire Company and Sussex County EMS were on scene.

They found a male victim in the side bedroom. Delaware State Troopers and neighbors initially tried to rescue him, but were held off by heat and smoke.  Firefighters found him unresponsive and was transported to Beebe medical center. Two dogs were also found deceased inside the home.

The Delaware State Fire Marshal Fatal Investigation Team is investigating the incident, which caused $30,000 damage.
