No Arrests In Threats On GOP Governor Candidate

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Police say there's been no arrest in the investigation of an emailed threat made against Republican Virginia gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli.

Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller says her agency and others on Friday were investigating a profanity-laden, semi-literate rant in which an anonymous writer threatened to kill Cuccinelli if he ran for Congress. Cuccinelli, the incumbent state attorney general, isn't seeking federal office.

Washington, D.C., television station NBC4 reports that investigators tracked the email's IP address to a Michigan house where they questioned residents.

Geller says the state police learn of threats against public officials almost weekly, mostly by Internet, and state police investigate most that come their way.

Making a threat via email is a federal offense punishable by up to five years imprisonment and a $250,000 fine.
