Learning To Be A Judge At The State Fair

Posted: Updated:

HARRINGTON, Del. - WMDT's Kody Leibowitz participated as a guest judge for one of the many food competitions at the Delaware State Fair.

The blueberry blowout, it's a feast only a blueberry connoisseur could truly enjoy. Cobblers, pies and martini style desserts whipped up with one goal in sight, to be crowned blueberry champion of the Delaware State Fair, and I was one of the select few brave souls chosen for the task.

First, I needed to put on the proper attire. "well now I'm official. I have the Delaware State Fair culinary arts apron."

Next up, to find my team and learn how to properly judge food. The man appointed as my teacher, Spicer Leaming, a man with over 50 years of experience.

Leaming says "what you're looking for is an excellent product that has been presented so that when you look at you think to yourself, gee id like to have some of that to eat."

Leibowitz says "we're actually about to start judging you cant be in here so ill come and get you when we're done."

13 delicious dishes later, it was time to chose a winner.

"First prize goes to... Dee Davis!"

Leibowitz says "do you think when alls said and done I'll be invited back again to actually judge another competition?" Leaming responds with "Um, I wouldn't count on that, no."

The first place prize was a blueberry pound cake. Congratulations to all of the contestants.
