Recovery Continues For Young Hit And Run Victim

Posted: Updated:

ABERDEEN, Md. - It's a special celebration of life for Jalyn Shaw. Her sixth birthday is one her mother thought she might not make.

Jalyn was visiting Ocean City last month, and was crossing the street with her family when she was hit by a car. Witnesses say she was thrown 40 feet, and the driver kept going.

"Her eyes were in the back of her head, she was unconscious," said Erin Shaw, Jalyn's mother. "I thought she was dead. I thought my child was dead."

But Jalyn survived the accident and is on the road to recovery, although that journey comes with the price of mounting medical bills.

As an avid Ravens fan, members of Raven's Nest 26 sponsored a birthday bash and fundraiser for Jalyn, complete with Kona Ice, games, food and prizes. And, a visit from Captain Defense and Purple Dame.

The event raised $1,500 halfway through the afternoon, and was expected to double by the end.

"It's amazing what good the human spirit can do," Dame said.

As she recovers, Jalyn has to sit out what 6-year-olds enjoy most about summer: bike rides, playgrounds and just being a kid. Doctors have cut all activities that have a risk of falling where she could re-injure her head.

Erin says it's tough, but it's much better than the alternative.

"She's our little miracle. My husband said it best, ‘God must have big plans for her.'"

Jalyn will be reevaluated after she starts first grade in September. Her mother hopes she can get back to a bit of a normal life, which includes playing with her new classmates at recess.
