Opening Day Of The Delaware State Fair

Posted: Updated:

HARRINGTON, Del. - Because of the heat, the carnival at the 94th Annual Delaware State Fair didn't actually start up until about 5:00 PM on Thursday, about five hours later than anticipated, but that didn't scare some folks off. WMDT's Kody Leibowitz was up at the fair and says for those that came out early, excitement sums up the feeling of this year's fair.

It's a hot, opening day at the fairgrounds, but the excessive heat and rising temperatures didn't stop Anthony Elgin from making the trip up from Rehoboth Beach. "First ones here, we get to see everything before anyone else." And what's he's seeing, food vendors and fair workers, building rides, bolting down the last touches before the crowds start lining up for what's expected to be a packed 10 days in Harrington.

"We're waiting for the people." Workers say close to 300,000 people will travel to the fairgrounds, listening to nightly musical lineups including this weekends show with Trace Adkins. But that's not what many fairgoers are most excited for.

"I'm most excited for the rides (which rides) the fireball (which one is that) its the one that takes you up in the air."

"When I'm not working I'm basically up here hanging out."

"I've got a grandkid, I've been in this business 30 years, and seeing a kid smile, that's the excitement for me."

Now before you venture out to the live music, you've got to see the circus and those racing pigs!
