Tawes Helps Boost Economy For Somerset County

Posted: Updated:

CRISFIELD, Md. - The one-day J. Millard Tawes Crab and Clam Bake provides a major economic boost for Somerset County and Crisfield.

According to Somerset County Economic Development Commission executive director Daniel Thompson, the event brings in 4,000-5,000 visitors to Crisfield, effectively doubling the city's population. The thousands will enjoy all local Maryland seafood and produce, consuming 250 bushels of crabs, 800 pounds of trout, 8,400 ears of corn and 25,000 clams.

"You'll have [a lot of visitors] coming into town, they're buying gas and they're going to Food Lion to service their own hospitality tents," said Thompson. "It's helping the hardware stores and restaurants."

Thompson says that ticket sales will amount to over $200,000 alone.
