Comments Sought On Backyard Chickens In VA Beach

Posted: Updated:

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - Virginia Beach officials are asking residents to comment on the possibility to change the city code to allow for people to keep chickens in their backyards.

Several localities in Virginia and across the country have begun to allow the practice and the city says it has been approached by a number of citizens asking for the change.

City officials say proponents argue they want to know where their food comes from and some consider the chickens pets.

Localities that have allowed urban chickens have limited the number of chickens residents can own, required a coop and charged permit fees.

While cities have changed their codes, Virginia Beach officials say state law complicates the issue because it allows a person to kill on-sight any dog that's injuring or killing a chicken.
