Carney Hosts Discussion On College Costs

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del. (AP) - School guidance counselors are telling U.S. Rep. John Carney that Delaware parents need to be more involved when it comes to planning for their children to go to college.

Earlier communication with students and their families, starting in middle school, also was among the recommendations made at a discussion Carney led Monday on the soaring costs of higher education.

Counselors also said they get little time and virtually no training for helping students navigate the college application process.

Participants in Monday's discussion also said colleges and universities need to be more transparent with students and parents, particularly regarding financial aid.

Monday's roundtable discussion in Dover was the first in what Carney says will be a series of such meetings about the challenges of higher education costs and possible solutions.
