Heavy Rains Bring Flooding, Hinder Motorists

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON (AP) - Heavy rains and flooding are making for treacherous driving in the mid-Atlantic region.

The National Weather Service says two to five inches of rain fell in some areas of the greater Washington D.C. area and more showers and chances of thunderstorms are possible Friday in the already saturated region. Flash flood watches and flood warnings are in effect for much of the area.

The rain kept officials from setting two-way traffic on the westbound span of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge to ease Friday afternoon beach traffic congestion and highway officials warned of an eight mile delay approaching the bridge. In Ocean City, police officers helped people whose cars had stalled in standing water.

In Delaware, officials reported flooded roads in Kent and Sussex counties, with water on many other roads.
