Five Rescued From Overturned Boat Off Deal Island

Posted: Updated:

DEAL ISLAND, Md. -  Maryland Natural Resources Police say five people were rescued after clinging for hours onto a capsized boat off Deal Island.

Authorities say the incident occurred around 7PM on Tuesday. The boat, operated by 70-year-old John Riggs of Salisbury, was hit by strong waves during a storm approximately 3 miles offshore.

Four other passengers were onboard at the time: 46-year-old John Franklin Riggs of Rock Hall, 43-year-old Contessa Riggs of Washington D.C., and two children under the age of 10.

When the boat took on water the vessel began to sink, before rolling over and ejecting all onboard into the water.  Fortunately, everyone was able to put on a life jacket beforehand, and 4 of the passengers held on to the boat while a 5th swam for help.  Rescue crews located the vessel around 3AM on Wednesday near the mouth of the Wicomico River.

All subjects were treated at the scene and released.
