Report: Wilmington Sees Drop In Crime

Posted: Updated:

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Wilmington officials say crime is down in the city, despite an increase in shootings.

A new report released Monday shows overall crime fell 24 percent in the first six months of 2013 when compared to the same period a year earlier. The report also shows a 12 percent decline in violent crimes, including murder, rape, and assault.

Mayor Dennis Williams credits aggressive policing and a new deployment plan. Williams believes shootings will also decrease as the city refines its plan and gets reinforcements from the police academy.

The city reports six homicides since Williams took office in January, a 50 percent drop. Those numbers don't include two people killed at the New Castle County Courthouse.

Councilman Michael Brown Sr. says he's not sure these statistics tell the real story.
